If you haven’t taken the opportunity to review “Visions of Smart Growth and Sustainability”, check it out at flasla.org. I helped to write and edit this 160-page document on regional and community planning.

As a landscape architect / physical planner, I am interesting in creating great places. But simply providing physical structures that are appealing and secure is not enough, if we are looking toward sustainability. What type and how large are the green spaces in a large city? Are they appropriate for agriculture and forestry; should this be a consideration? Is there significant biodiversity that can ward off disease and plague? If our urban areas are to increase in height, we cannot ignor the requirement of green space to keep the increased density viable for residents. Having office and stores within walking distance is important, but if furure cities spread and devour all nearby agricultural space is there a possibility of starvation in the midst of great urban places?
